Commentary on the movements

  1. [Chorale]: Ach, lieben Christen, seid getrost. A vivace (so marked) first movement, using the standard formula of soprano chorale tune, imitative lower voices, and an independent instrumental texture here composed of lively dactyls.
  2. Aria (Tenor): Wo wird in diesem Jammertale. Beginning with a pedal point and angular, leaping flute figuration, this aria depicts the "vale of tears" perfectly.
  3. Recitativo (Bass): O Sünder, trage mit Geduld. Secco recitative-arioso.
  4. Choral (Soprano): Kein Frucht das Weizen körnlein bringt. The hesitating continuo line offers a counterpoint similar to the baseline of the first movement to the choral tune.
  5. Aria (Alto): Du machst, o Tod, mir nun nicht ferner bange. Although written in B, the movement is so often in the minor that it is almost as dark as the others, yet the "joyful, confident tone" does come through in places1.
  6. Recitativo (Tenor): Indes bedenke deine Seele. Secco recitative.
  7. Choral: Wir wachen oder schlafen ein. A plain chorale setting.
