Commentary on the movements

  1. Aria (Soprano): Bereitet die Wege, bereitet die Bahn! The light scoring and lively use of frequent concertante oboe solos offers this aria "buoyant rhythm...[with] exceptional charm"1. Frequent melismas in the voice show off the singer's technique while simultaneously illustrating the text: "Machet die Stege...ganz eben".
  2. Recitativo (Tenor): Willst du dich Gottes Kind und Christi Bruder nennen. Secco recitative with frequent arioso and imitation.
  3. Aria (Bass): Wer bist du? Frage dein Gewissen. A continuo aria, but the cello part is, practically speaking, and obbligato part. The leaping motive and its frequent repetition are to be interpreted as asking the listener to examine his own conscience1. The vocal part is unusually low-lying.
  4. Recitativo (Alto): Ich will, mein Gott, dir frei heraus bekennen. Accompagnato with strings.
  5. Aria (Alto): Christi Glieder, ach bedenket. Solo violin begins out as a lament, but then turns into a virtuosic accompaniment, while the voice pleads out the words.
  6. Chorale: Ertöt uns durch deine Güte. A plain chorale setting, although notably omitted in the score.
